Joint volume = tiled area × [1 − tile face area ÷ repeating tile-and-joint area] × joint depth.

How much grout do tile joints need?

Measure the actual area of tile and specify the tile face length and width, planned joint width and filled depth. The estimate reports joint cavity volume rather than assuming every bag of grout has the same coverage.

What formula estimates grout joint volume?

A repeating rectangular tile grid has a cell area of (tile length + joint width) × (tile width + joint width). The joint fraction is one minus tile face area divided by cell area. Multiply that fraction by tiled area and joint depth.

What does a 100 square foot tile example show?

For 12 in square tile, 1/8 in joints and 1/4 in fill depth, the grid gives about 2.05% open joint area. Across 100 sq ft, the measured cavity is about 1.21 L before any allowance. Compare this with a specific grout’s published coverage or yield.

Why does grout depth matter?

Depth is the space that will actually receive grout after the tile is set. It may differ from tile thickness because adhesive occupies part of the joint. Measure or verify the intended fill depth.

How do you account for wider joints?

Increase the joint width to your planned spacing. A change in joint width alters both longitudinal and transverse joint coverage, so the estimate should be recalculated rather than scaled from tile area alone.

Should floor and wall areas be combined?

You can sum areas only if tile dimensions and joint geometry are the same. For different tiles or joint depths, run separate scenarios and add the order quantities afterward.

How are grout bags estimated?

Enter the actual mixed grout yield in liters per bag from the product data. The tool rounds required volume, including the entered allowance, up to whole bags. A bag weight alone cannot determine volume without a supported density or yield.

Does grout type change the geometric formula?

Joint cavity geometry is independent of whether you select cementitious or epoxy grout. Product density, usable yield, coverage and installation losses vary, so check the chosen product’s data sheet.

What is excluded from the grout estimate?

The geometric estimate excludes movement joints filled with sealant, layout edge effects, spills, cleaning loss and uneven joints. Use an allowance appropriate to the actual project and manufacturer guidance.

Which nearby calculators help plan a tile project?

The tile calculator helps estimate tile count and cuts. Square footage measures the installation area. Keep adhesive, movement joints and grout as separate line items.

Frequently asked questions

What questions come up about grout?

How do I calculate grout for 12 by 12 tile?

Enter the tiled area, 12 in tile length and width, then your planned joint width and filled depth. Add product yield for bags.

Does larger tile use less grout?

At the same joint width and depth, larger tiles generally create less joint area per square foot.

Can I estimate bags from bag weight alone?

No. Use manufacturer coverage or mixed-volume yield for that grout product.

Should movement joints be included?

No. They generally use a compatible sealant and should be measured separately.
