Whole cartons = ceil[(net floor area × (1 + allowance)) ÷ coverage per carton].

How much plank flooring should you buy?

Measure the main room and additional areas that use the same product. Subtract only voids that will not receive flooring, then apply a separate cut allowance and round up to whole cartons.

Laminate flooring uses this same carton and plank takeoff. Enter the actual laminate carton coverage, plank dimensions, layout allowance and stated installation quote. Product expansion gaps and installation details require the manufacturer instructions.

What is the flooring carton formula?

Multiply the net square footage by one plus your allowance fraction. Divide by the printed square feet per carton and round up, because partial cartons generally cannot be ordered.

Whole cartons = ceil[(net floor area × (1 + allowance)) ÷ coverage per carton].

What does a 12 by 10 foot room need?

The room has 120 sq ft before any voids. At a 10% allowance the target is 132 sq ft; a product covering 20 sq ft per carton needs seven whole cartons.

What does a worked flooring example show?
Input or step Example
Main room area 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft
Cut allowance 10% = 12 sq ft
Target coverage 132 sq ft
Carton coverage 20 sq ft
Whole cartons 7 cartons; 140 sq ft purchased

How do you include a second room?

Add its measured area in the other-area field when using the same product. Record different products, colors or carton coverage as separate scenarios.

Which openings should be subtracted?

Subtract only genuinely uninstalled spaces. Small doorways or alcoves may still receive planks; do not subtract them merely because they interrupt the room outline.

How should you set the cut allowance?

A straight, simple installation may waste less than a diagonal or complex room. Choose an allowance based on the actual layout and product guidance rather than assuming a universal percentage.

Can you estimate individual plank pieces?

Yes, enter both face length and width to get an approximate count from allowed area. Carton coverage remains the purchasing basis because mixed cuts affect usable pieces.

Why does carton coverage matter more than plank count?

Manufacturers sell plank flooring by packages with a printed square-foot coverage. A cut piece may not fit another edge, so the piece count alone does not set the order.

Is this the same as a tile calculator?

No. This page focuses on plank flooring and carton coverage. Use the tile calculator for tile dimensions, piece count and tile cartons.

Which costs are included?

The optional price multiplies whole cartons. Underlayment, trim, transition pieces, adhesive, labor, tax and delivery remain separate.
