Installed topsoil volume = area × depth. If the loose material loses a known percentage of volume after placement, divide finished volume by (1 − reduction).

How much topsoil does a garden bed need?

Multiply the bed footprint by the planned finished depth. In feet and inches, cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. Measure clear inside borders and leave out any space already occupied by structures.

Installed soil

Cubic yards = area (sq ft) × finished depth (in) ÷ 324

For several beds, calculate each nonoverlapping footprint separately and add the resulting volumes. A single average depth can hide low spots, so measure the finished depth at representative locations before ordering.

How do you calculate topsoil for a circle?

Use π times the radius squared for the area, then multiply by depth. The entered diameter should be the inside planted area, not the outside border.

Can you enter a known lawn or garden area?

Yes. Choose known area when it has already been measured from a plan. The same depth-to-volume conversion applies, but irregular grades may need several separate measurements.

What is loose-to-finished volume reduction?

A loose delivery can settle or compact after placement. If a project-supported percentage reduction applies, divide required finished volume by one minus that fraction. Do not assume a universal compaction factor; soil composition and placement differ.

A 20% volume reduction means the finished material is 80% of the loose quantity; divide finished volume by 0.80. It is not equivalent to merely adding 20% to finished volume. Use zero when the project has no reliable adjustment.

How many topsoil bags should you buy?

Divide the loose order volume by the printed volume per bag and round up. Bag weight alone is insufficient to infer volume without density.

How do you estimate topsoil by tons?

Use the actual loose bulk density supplied for the soil. Multiply cubic meters by kilograms per cubic meter and convert to metric tonnes or US short tons. Moisture can change delivered weight.

What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?

Topsoil is selected for the planting surface and may contain organic material. The dirt calculator addresses general earth volume and excavation or fill adjustments. Check the soil specification for your planting project.

How does ordering allowance affect the estimate?

Apply a separate allowance to loose order volume after any supported reduction. The measured finished volume remains visible to audit each assumption.

What does a topsoil bed example look like?

A 10 by 10 ft bed at 3 in finished depth needs 25 ft³, approximately 0.926 yd³ before any settling adjustment or allowance.

What should you check with the supplier?

Confirm screening, soil blend, contaminants where relevant, bag volume, density, delivered unit and minimum load. This quantity worksheet does not judge soil quality.

Bag volume and delivery density should describe the same soil product you plan to use. A cost estimate based on local quotes remains separate from delivery, grading and installation labor.

Frequently asked questions

What questions come up about topsoil?

How many cubic yards of topsoil cover 100 square feet?

At 3 in depth, 100 × 3 ÷ 324 is about 0.926 yd³ before adjustment.

How many bags equal one cubic yard?

Divide 27 ft³ by the volume printed on the bag, then round up.

Does topsoil shrink after installation?

It can settle, but the amount depends on the soil and how it is placed. Enter only a supported reduction.

Can I estimate tons from cubic yards?

Only with a supplier density for the specific soil and moisture condition.
