Sand cubic yards = measured area (sq ft) × layer depth (in) ÷ 324. Add nonoverlapping zones, then adjust for a verified loose-to-placed reduction if needed.

How to Calculate Sand in Cubic Yards and Tons

Sand volume is calculated by area and depth: Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × (Depth in / 12)) / 27. To convert cubic yards to tons: Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.35 (based on average dry builder’s sand density of 2,700 lbs per cubic yard).

Frequently asked questions

What questions come up about sand quantities?

How much does 1 cubic yard of sand weigh?

One cubic yard of dry builder's sand weighs approximately 2,600 to 2,800 pounds (about 1.3 to 1.4 tons). Damp or wet sand weighs up to 3,000–3,200 pounds (1.5–1.6 tons) per cubic yard.

How many bags of sand do I need for 1 cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Since a standard 50 lb bag of play sand contains approximately 0.5 cubic feet, you need 54 fifty-pound bags to equal 1 cubic yard.
