Stone purchase units equal net layout area adjusted for open joints and cutting allowance, divided by usable face coverage per stone or crate, rounded up.

How to Calculate Stones, Crates, and Pallets for Walkways

When constructing a natural stone walkway or garden path, stones are often supplied in bulk crates or wire-tied pallets containing a fixed piece count or square footage. The crate formula is: Crates Needed = Total Stones Needed / Stones Per Crate.

Worked Example: If a project requires 2,000 stones and each crate contains 50 stones: 2,000 ÷ 50 = 40 crates. For bed prep under stones, calculate required bedding aggregate with our Sand Calculator.

Natural stone coverage worksheet

How much flat stone covers your patio or path?

Measure each surface, then use your stone supplier’s usable face or crate coverage.

Measurement units

Enter face coverage excluding joints. If the supplier quotes installed coverage including joints, set open joints to 0 to avoid subtracting them twice. This worksheet does not estimate loose gravel or stone base.

Frequently asked questions

What questions come up about landscape stone?

How many crates of stone do I need if I need 2,000 stones and each crate holds 50?

You need exactly 40 crates (2,000 ÷ 50 = 40 crates). If cutting or irregular breakage is expected, ordering 42–44 crates provides a safe 5–10% buffer.

How much stone do I need for a 100 sq ft walkway?

For 1.5" to 2" thick flagstone, 1 ton covers approximately 80 to 100 square feet. A 100 sq ft walkway requires approximately 1.1 to 1.25 tons of stone including waste.
