Deck budget = area × material quote × (1 + allowance) + area × labor quote + railing length × quote + project extras, tax and contingency

How much will a new deck project cost?

Measure the rectangular footprint, then enter comparable decking and installation quote ranges. Add framing, foundation, railings, stairs, finishes, removal and project fees separately. The result is a scoped budget from your rates; it does not infer contractor prices from location or deck height.

How is deck area used in the estimate?

Area = length × width. Choose whether area-based quotes are per sq ft or per m². The measured area converts independently of the quote basis. Decking material allowance adds purchase area, while labor uses the net footprint. Irregular decks can be broken into rectangles and evaluated separately.

What does the decking material subtotal include?

Material subtotal = deck area × material rate × (1 + allowance/100). Use a material-only quote for this line. Boards, fascia and accessories already included in the rate must not be entered a second time as extras. For actual board lengths and counts, use a decking takeoff rather than relying only on a cost-per-area estimate.

Calculation equation

Deck budget = area × material quote × (1 + allowance) + area × labor quote + railing length × quote + project extras, tax and contingency

What does a twelve-by-ten-foot deck example show?

The footprint is 120 sq ft. With illustrative decking rates of 5–7 per sq ft and a 10% material allowance, the material subtotal is 660–924. At 10 per sq ft labor, installation adds 1,200. Framing, railings, stairs and permits remain separate rather than silently included.

How are framing and foundations budgeted?

Enter the total quote for the appropriate framing and foundation scope. That scope can depend on height, soil, spans, connectors, ledger details and local requirements. This calculator does not size beams or approve connections. A structural plan and a measured material takeoff are needed before using the budget as an order.

How is a railing quote converted?

Enter installed railing length and price per foot or per meter together. The selected quote basis converts the measured length before applying the rate. Do not use the whole perimeter automatically when parts of the deck meet a building or have a stair opening; measure the rail that is actually included.

How do you avoid duplicate labor and project extras?

Keep material-only and installed quotes distinct. If a contractor package already includes railings or framing, leave those duplicate extras blank. Tax applies to decking material subtotal, and contingency applies to the combined project budget. The itemized result makes scope differences between competing quotes easier to identify.

Which inputs should you verify before calculating?

Check each measurement and the printed input unit. Required values must describe the same project scope; blank optional extras contribute zero unless a linked field requires them. A quote worksheet, not a deck structural design. Separate material-only rates from installed bundled quotes to avoid adding labor or railing twice.

How can you compare results and save the worksheet?

Calculate a baseline and add it to comparison, then change one assumption and calculate again. Copy or share the result, download the input and result sheet, or print that worksheet. Clear changes removes the current inputs and results; refreshing starts a clean worksheet.

Use Decking Calculator and Board Foot Calculator. Their measurements can inform the relevant inputs, but check that their units and scope match before transferring a value.
