Glass mass = net area × total glass thickness × density × panel count; add separately entered interlayer / hardware mass

Glass Weight per Square Foot Reference Table

Architectural glass panels weigh the following based on nominal thickness:

  • 1/8″ (3 mm) Glass: 1.60 lbs / sq ft (7.8 kg/m²)
  • 3/16″ (5 mm) Glass: 2.45 lbs / sq ft (12.0 kg/m²)
  • 1/4″ (6 mm) Glass: 3.27 lbs / sq ft (16.0 kg/m²)
  • 3/8″ (10 mm) Glass: 5.10 lbs / sq ft (24.9 kg/m²)
  • 1/2″ (12 mm) Toughened Glass: 6.25 lbs / sq ft (30.5 kg/m²)
  • 3/4″ (19 mm) Glass: 9.80 lbs / sq ft (47.8 kg/m²)

What are your glass weight inputs?

The float-glass density is a documented material reference, not a product certification. Insulating-unit spacers, frames and laminated interlayers need their own entered mass.

Frequently asked questions

What questions come up about this calculation?

How much does 1/2 inch glass weigh per square foot?

A 1/2 inch (12 mm) glass panel weighs approximately 6.25 to 6.50 pounds per square foot (about 30.5 kg/m²). A standard 3 ft × 7 ft frameless shower door in 1/2" glass weighs approximately 131 pounds.

What is the specific gravity and density of glass?

Standard architectural soda-lime glass has a specific gravity of 2.50 to 2.52 and a density of 2,500 kg/m³ (approximately 156 pounds per cubic foot).

Is tempered glass heavier than regular annealed glass?

No. The tempering thermal process rearranges internal stresses to increase impact strength by 4–5×, but it does not alter the glass density or mass.
