Joist intervals = ceiling(first-to-last centerline width/maximum spacing); joists per bay = intervals + 1; cut length = clear span + two bearing lengths; blocking gap = equal center spacing − actual joist face width

How do you calculate joist takeoff?

Count floor joists, stock lengths, bearing allowance, blocking pieces and rim stock from an approved spacing and floor-bay layout. Member takeoff only, from an approved floor plan. No joist span table, species/grade sizing, vibration, deflection or load capacity is selected. Floor bays are independent and do not share counted members.

Which measurements should you enter?

Width means the distance between the first and last boundary joist centerlines. Clear span excludes the bearing lengths.

Which equation gives the result?

Joist intervals = ceiling(first-to-last centerline width/maximum spacing); joists per bay = intervals + 1; cut length = clear span + two bearing lengths; blocking gap = equal center spacing − actual joist face width

What does a worked example show?

A 12 ft first-to-last joist width at a maximum 16 in spacing gives nine intervals and ten joists. A 10 ft clear span with 3 in bearing at each end needs a 10.5 ft member.

Which assumptions affect the estimate?

Bays are independent in this takeoff. Shared boundary members require a separate layout adjustment rather than automatic double counting.

What should you verify before using the result?

Blocking cut lengths use the calculated spacing minus actual joist face width. Counts do not establish allowable spans, species, grade, fastening or support adequacy.

How do you keep units consistent?

Select measurement units before entering dimensions. Keep density, price and product coverage units attached to their labels. The calculator converts geometry but does not invent a missing supplier value.

Which input units apply to this worksheet?

The table lists the field units and the condition in which each input is used.

Input units and conditions
Input Units Condition
Clear bearing-to-bearing span ft / m all modes
Distance between first and last joist centerlines ft / m all modes
Specified maximum joist center spacing in / cm all modes
Specified bearing length at each end in / cm all modes
Approved stock joist length ft / m all modes
Actual joist face width for blocking gaps in / cm all modes
Independent identical floor bays (optional) as labeled all modes
Whole rows of blocking per bay (optional) as labeled all modes
Rim stock length (optional) ft / m all modes
Joist spare allowance (%) (optional) as labeled all modes
Price per stock joist (optional) as labeled all modes
Price per rim stock piece (optional) as labeled all modes

How can you compare and save scenarios?

Calculate a baseline, add it to comparison and change one project value. Copy or share the result, download the order sheet or print inputs and results. Reload and clear controls return the worksheet to blank numeric inputs.

Which tools help with the next calculation?

Continue with Board Foot Calculator and Framing Calculator. Check scope and units before transferring the result.
