## At a glance

Core rule: Compare solid plate and expanded metal as specified products with the
same intended screen task. Standard formula: solid-plate mass equals area × thickness
× density; expanded-sheet mass uses the exact supplier’s mass per area. Quick estimate
range: no universal percentage converts every plate into expanded metal. Recommended
tool: use the Qtywise Steel Weight Calculator for solid steel geometry, with expanded
product data recorded separately.

Solid plate and expanded metal differ in opening pattern, visibility, handling mass,
edge details and supporting requirements. Choose the screen’s actual purpose before
comparing prices or weights. A decorative privacy screen, ventilation panel and
protective barrier do not have interchangeable requirements. The five tradeoffs
here concern product selection and quantity planning for a nonstructural screen.
They do not establish guard, fall-protection, security or structural compliance.

## What must the screen let through or conceal?

Open area describes the proportion of a panel occupied by openings, but the selected
pattern also affects how the screen looks from different directions. McNICHOLS describes
expanded metal as sheet that is slit and stretched into openings, with several available
types and materials. A solid plate has no corresponding open pattern unless the
selected product includes separate perforations or cutouts. Identify the actual
proposed product instead of comparing generic labels.

Record the required visibility or screening task, the intended viewing direction
and any project-specific airflow criteria. Obtain the appropriate technical review
when ventilation performance matters. Open-area percentage alone does not establish
pressure drop or the performance of the completed assembly. Frames, neighboring
surfaces and installation details can affect the final opening arrangement.

For a solid steel alternative, the Qtywise Steel Weight Calculator can estimate
mass from measured dimensions and an entered density. Keep that result with the
solid alternative rather than treating it as the expanded panel’s weight. Obtain
an exact product reference for the expanded option so the comparison includes its
pattern, thickness designation and manufacturer data.

## How much does each complete alternative weigh?

Solid plate is modeled as continuous volume. Expanded metal needs product-specific
mass because the strand geometry and manufacturing form matter. A nominal gauge
or overall raised thickness does not describe an equivalent solid volume. Use the
supplier’s stated kilograms per square meter or pounds per square foot for the exact
expanded item, including the finish basis where provided. Record whether that value
is nominal or measured.

For a hypothetical solid panel, assume length 2 meters, width 1 meter, thickness
3 millimeters and density 7,850 kilograms per cubic meter. Area is 2 square meters
and volume is 0.006 cubic meter. Calculated mass is 47.1 kilograms before any additional
coating, frame or fittings. The density is an approximate nominal steel value, consistent
with SSAB’s steel reference, rather than a certificate for a particular plate.

Suppose a fictional expanded product has a supplier mass of 8 kilograms per square
meter. The same 2-square-meter panel would have a nominal sheet mass of 16 kilograms.
This invented product value demonstrates the calculation only. It is not a catalog
specification, a universal saving or proof that the alternatives provide equivalent
strength, stiffness, privacy or service performance.

### Separate sheet mass from assembly mass

Add the actual frame, connections and other parts to each alternative on its own
basis. A light sheet mounted in a heavier frame can produce an assembly whose difference
is much smaller than the sheet comparison suggests. Do not reuse the same frame
allowance automatically if the two products require different edge support or fabrication
details. The selected design needs its own approved arrangement.

When transport or manual handling matters, obtain verified mass and suitable handling
instructions for the complete delivered item. A theoretical sheet result does not
identify center of gravity or a safe lifting method. Use the Qtywise Steel Weight
Calculator to check the solid components that its geometry supports, then retain
supplier values for expanded sheets and other items outside that model.

## Will the selected surface and edges suit the application?

Expanded metal is available in raised and flattened forms. McNICHOLS distinguishes
those types in its selection guidance. Specify the exact form when requesting a
sample or quotation. Two products with similar opening descriptions can have different
surfaces and dimensions, so a photograph or shorthand product label may not give
the fabricator enough information.

Identify exposed edges, accessible faces and required finishing details. Request
supplier or fabricator guidance for the actual product and use. A decorative screen
that people can touch needs an explicit edge treatment and installation detail appropriate
to the application. Avoid assuming that cutting the sheet to an outline creates
a finished, acceptable edge. Keep any required edge trim in the quantity and price
comparison.

For solid plate, record the required cutting, drilling and finishing work as separate
scope. For expanded metal, specify the required pattern direction and edge-cut arrangement.
McNICHOLS’ ordering guidance includes design direction and shearing preferences.
Confirm those selections on a drawing or marked sample before ordering several panels;
an otherwise correct sheet can be unsuitable when its pattern is oriented differently
from the approved design.

## Which supporting details need approval?

The word nonstructural does not remove every design responsibility. A screen still
needs an appropriate supporting and fixing arrangement for its actual location.
Wind exposure, accessible edges and connection details require the relevant project
review. A mass comparison cannot establish whether a particular plate or expanded
pattern is acceptable. Obtain the responsible designer’s requirements before treating
two products as equivalents.

Record panel dimensions, support locations, fixing type and material compatibility
in the comparison package. Ask the supplier for applicable product information rather
than extending a rating from another pattern, span or installation. If the project
requires a tested assembly, verify the actual assembly scope. Do not apply walkway
or grating data automatically to a different decorative screening product.

Keep revisions clear when a lighter alternative is proposed. A change in sheet type
can affect edge details, frame requirements and fabrication. Ask the responsible
reviewer to approve the resulting arrangement, then revise the quantity sheet. This
prevents an old frame takeoff from remaining attached to a new panel specification
without anyone checking the connection between them.

## What is included in the purchased panel?

Compare stock sheet size, cut-piece quantity, fabrication, finishing and delivery.
A quoted price per sheet differs from a quoted price per finished panel. Identify
offcuts and any minimum order terms from the actual supplier quotation. If the pattern
direction restricts nesting, use the approved cutting arrangement to establish purchase
quantities rather than dividing total area by stock-sheet area alone.

Use current local prices in the relevant currency. UK and European quotations commonly
use metric dimensions, while US suppliers may identify stock in customary units.
Preserve the exact product reference and convert the comparison units carefully.
A price converted between currencies is not a verified price for supply in another
market. Record quotation date, validity and tax treatment with the actual offered
product.

Finish the comparison with a complete product description for each alternative:
panel material and form, dimensions, mass basis, required edge work, approved supporting
arrangement and delivered price scope. Recheck the solid option in the Qtywise Steel
Weight Calculator using its actual dimensions. Retain the expanded supplier’s mass-
per-area record beside that result before releasing the selected panel order.

| Fictional expanded sheet | 16.0 kg | 2 m² at a fictional 8 kg/m² |
| Frame and fittings | Obtain actual quantities | Keep separate from sheet mass |
